The Context

SepuraHome is a sustainable smart home appliance that takes the traditional garburator and divert food waste out of the sewage system and into an under the sink compost bin. This solution was both necessary (since municipalities are banning garburators due to the negative impact the food waste has on the sewage system) and appealing since more and more consumers want to find convenient ways to compost their food. Sepura Home launched at CES 2020 and was awarded Engadget best of CES finalist in 2 categories and covered by media outlets such as CNet.

A Frictionless Path from Kitchen to Compost

The user experience is designed to feel familiar and frictionless. Food waste is rinsed down the sink as with a traditional disposal, creating a seamless entry point. Behind the scenes, solids are diverted into a sealed collection bin while liquids continue to drain.

Smoothing Out the Routine

An easy to access sliding compartment made it easy to access the compost bin when it was time to be emptied. The cover for the carbon filter was also designed to act as a cover for the compost bin so that people could cover up their compost bin and avoid a stinky mess on their trip out of their home. We iterated on the design to refine the product and get it ready for the real world. LED indicators let you know when it’s time to empty the bin.
