Everyday Life with Robots: Coevolving with Intelligent Machines

THE FUTURE OF HUMAN-MACHINE COLLABORATION

Ancient Greek philosophers, like Aristotle who explored the nature of the soul and the essence of human knowledge in his treatise “De Anima,” along with visionaries of the 20th century like Alan Turing, Claude Shannon, and Isaac Asimov, have been fascinated by and rigorously studied the concept of intelligence for centuries. Turing’s work on computability and the famous “Turing Test” laid the theoretical foundation for evaluating machine intelligence. At the same time, Shannon’s research into chess-playing programs hinted at the vast potential for machines to exhibit intelligent behavior. However, Asimov’s “Robot series” and his notable ‘Three Laws of Robotics’ offered a glimpse into a future where intelligent machines could work alongside their human creators.

Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics are as follows:

  • A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

  • A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

  • A robot must protect its existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

These laws, prioritizing human safety and obedience to human commands, sparked a conversation about the ethical implications of creating artificial beings decades later. As we are experiencing the new era of AI and robotics, concerns have risen regarding the potential for this new form of intelligence to oppose the idea of working with humans. So far, the majority of technology demos that have forefronted AI-enabled robotics have been tone-deaf to these real human sensitivities. Rather than dedicating efforts to developing robots that fundamentally incorporate human intentions, designers have been enlisted to focus instead on aesthetic enhancements, dressing robots to resemble high-end, exotic cars.

VISION

At Card79, we believe the answer to these concerns lies in a future where intelligent machines work to support humans in the most humble ways while creating the most potentially positive impact. Our vision is to allow robots to take on mundane roles so people can live more enriched and creative lives. At the same time, there are always practical implementation questions that interest us, and we address them in the coevolution case studies we undertake.

Our team has been at the forefront of designing future-facing products for clients such as Neuralink, Rapid Robotics, Science, and Prophetic. These products showcase the rapid advancements in AI and robotics, offering a tangible glimpse into a future where humans and intelligent machines can collaborate and advance together. As AI and robotics co-evolve, they usher in a new era of endless opportunities, and we are excited to explore its potential impact on various aspects of our lives.

A LOOK AT WHAT'S TO COME

To further illustrate the potential impact of coevolution, we have developed a series of case studies that explore how this next wave of AI-enabled robotics we’ll see in the years and decades to come can affect various aspects of our lives.

Case Study 1: With the multiple industrial robotics companies vying to win the battle of AI-enabled industrial robotics, the remaining workforce is bound to be impacted. This case study looks at how robots that will take on various industrial tasks in factories can also become intelligent collaborators that enhance human work and wellness.

Case Study 2: What would it take to trust a care robot to look after your aging mother or grandmother as she embarks on her journey in an autonomous RV, living out her golden years truly free to explore the world without fear? This case study examines how AI and robotics could impact elder care to improve the quality of life and enable independence for seniors, especially as the number of caregivers decreases yearly.

Case study 3: As cities age, the likelihood of building out smart city infrastructure seems less and less likely. More likely is a future with robots that can exist within the existing city infrastructure. This case study asks how maintenance robots can be designed to not only preserve aging buildings but also enhance living spaces and influence urban community design.

These case studies highlight how human-machine collaboration can not only lead to increased efficiency and innovation but also promote a more compassionate and inclusive society. They offer a preview of how AI and robotics can tackle real-world challenges and enrich human experiences.

But that’s just the beginning – we have an exciting lineup of case studies in the works, each delving into a different facet of how humans and machines can work together to create a brighter, more innovative future.
